Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMHD)
Symptoms may occur anytime during the first year postpartum and extend beyond if untreated. PMADs are caused by any combination of factors that include personal and/or family medical history, a parent’s sensitivity to hormonal shifts, the level of stress that they are experiencing, and the amount of support a family has in caring for their baby. It’s important to note that many who suffer from a PMAD may never really feel “depressed” at all. More often than not, their primary symptoms are distress and anxiety.
